How do I get my stepchildren with me to Hawaii?

So, for right now, my husband and son are PCSing with me to Hawaii and they are on my orders but at some point my step kids will be coming with us full time. How do I get them over to Hawaii or on my orders when that time comes? Do I have to make them my dependents and then they come over? Do we pay out of pocket to fly them over? Will housing accommodate us and give us bigger housing? Any insight would be helpful as I’ve never done this before. I’ve only PCD’d with my son.

One of my soldiers had something similar... He married his gf which at the time had a child that was not his. His wife stayed home until he legally adopted his stepchild. Base housing can only accommodate for the dependents that are on DEERS... I’m not sure about over in Hawaii SSg, but that’s how it goes over here in Ft Carson

SGT (Join to see) the only thing I'd add, is if there is a custody arrangement, that may be leveraged to get housing, but all roads lead to DEERS.

They have to be added to your DEERS. In order to do that they will have to be your dependents and your husband will need to have custody of them. Once they are on your DEERS you have to get them EFMP screenings and then command sponsorship, then they can receive their own travel orders.
As for housing, it's whatever the local policy is where you're going.

Thank you for that. Now, he and their mom share custody but she’s terminally ill and wants them to go with us. Will he need full custody or is that enough? I was told that because he and I are married, as long as they are in DEERS, they are my dependents thru him. Sounds like they will just have to go through the same program that my son and husband had to go through. Easy enough.

You'll have to ask levy about the full custody part. I brought my kids to Okinawa and I needed to have 51% or more because it's OCONUS. Everyone I know who brought step kids over had primary custody of their kids. On top of that, they will need their mothers written consent. It's easiest to just write it into the custody agreement.
