I’m currently assigned a 15H2O position and as an MRT and UMO. Originally I was promised a PSG position and sent to that specific unit by my CSM. Before that, I filled in as a BN Retention NCO. I was just trying to help my BN. I’m also coming up on 17yrs in Aug. I’m not sure how working one down will help me progress as I’m so close to 18yrs. What should I do?

If you are trying to make E-7 I would go back to your CSM and let him know. If he sent you to be a PSG, then that is what he wants you there for.

I would make an appointment with the CSM to discuss your career and promotion. Sometimes soldiers and NCOs need overhead cover from the big boy.

You should ask for an audience with the CSM as he assigned you to the unit. I would recommend not pushing a PSG role rather simply requesting that you be assigned a 30 level position. If you have hope of making E7 you will definitely need a 30 billet. If your Battalion is that stacked with E6s that they are assigning you to 20s then you might ask for a transfer. Thank you for your service.

If I were in your shoes, I'd go the the 1SG and ask his advice. You are perilously close to the QMP cutoff and he'll recognize that.
The real problem is your place on the SLC/E-7 selection list. If you haven't been selected or are unlikely to be promoted before year 18, you will probably face QMP regardless of your current assignment.
Disclaimer - please note that I left the service in 1996 and the QMP cutoffs may have changed. If so, I apologize for getting you wound up.
