I have two years left in the service, and I am currently looking to start my own restaurant in Maryland. It has been a dream of mine, and I would like to network with people in this market area to find out the good, the bad, and the ugly. Before I joined I worked my way from a dish washer to a chef through several kitchens. I would love to have my own kitchen.

SPC Smith you are spot on that business schools do not prepare a person to own a business.  You are networking and starting your planning early.  You don't just want a restaurant, you are working toward a successful business.  God bless your endeavors!

Thank you MSG, I actually needed to see this. I found it difficult to find a mentor because I narrowed my search, but just thinking of it as a business in a niche market could help broaden the possibilities a bit.

Have you looked into using your GI Bill to go to a culinary arts school in the D.C. area?  I am not sure how many exist but I am sure there is some form of placement assistance/connections you could make.

SFC Boyer, after going to business school for a BA, there is one thing I've learned, school does not truly prepare you for the obsticals of owning your own business. My GI Bill is a safety net option to get my MBA. I thank you for your insight about culinary school as an option.
