What's your military/national-holiday tradition or routine?

Over the years, how have you and your family recognized those holidays w/ military or national significance? Some folks may volunteer, attend events or parades together, while others may stay closer to home, relax, recharge, and reflect together. During this time there's often military-related movie marathons and documentaries on, which ones do you tune-in to? Does your family have an interesting or unique tradition? Perhaps you attend annual parades or watch the television coverage, or have patriotic or military-themed playlists on in the background... if so, what significance does this have for you and your family? Well, this should be a great discussion, and I'm sure we'll all learn a thing-or-two about military history and each other in the process. The Young Lions. Great WWII film that has Marlon Brando playing a German Army officer who becomes disillusioned. Also stars Dean Martin, Montgomery Clift, Hope Lange. Based on the book of the same name by Irwin Shaw.

"We Were Soldiers" One of my all time favorite war movies. Also "Flags of Our Fathers".

Mel Gibson knows how to make a war movie! I think that I enjoyed Letters from Iwo Jima better though. It is interesting on seeing things from a different perspective.

Yes it is. When they are more true to form, they are even better. There are so many awesome movies, it is difficult to choose. I loved the way we were soldiers was shown from all perspectives.

My first choice is always Das Boot. It's a long one but such a great film. You can never go wrong with the classics, Bridge on the River Kwai, Midway, Tora Tora Tora, etc.

I'll throw one out there for you guys. There is a Russian movie that came out within the past decade called 9th Company. It tells of the Soviet experience in Afghanistan and is an EXCELLENT action film whilst still portraying military brotherhood extremely well.

Directed by Fedor Bondarchuk. With Artur Smolyaninov, Aleksey Chadov, Konstantin Kryukov, Ivan Kokorin. Young Soviet Army recruits are stuck in the bloody war in Afghanistan, that was started by politicians.

9th Company is a fantastic film. I have found it frequently being compared to Full Metal Jacket, but I think the Russian version is a little better. If you find the Russian military interesting, they recently had a movie- Stalingrad- came out this past winter. It's told from the stand point of a modern rescue worker who's father died in the siege at Stalingrad.
