In 1941, a huge battleship that was never actually fielded- but the US had plans to develop a 71K Ton Battleship, the Montana-Class Battleship which would rival the Japanese Yamamoto-class ships. A heavily armored ship with twelve, 16-inch main guns, the Montana-class ships were armed to the teeth. Ultimately, the Navy decided to not build the Montana-class ships; opting to build smaller and faster ships that could keep up with America's newest carriers.

I remember drooling over this ship in Jane's Fighting Ships of WWII and wishing it was real. This class would have been beautiful!
