Today is Cinco De Mayo, so I thought I would share a story about good people in Mexico. So we were in Matzalan, Mexico. They have a lighthouse there way up at the top of a very steep mountain. It is the second highest lighthouse in the world. So Kathy and I trudged off to scale it.
That day the temperature was darn near 100 degrees and the Humidity was off the charts. You sweated but it just stuck to your skin like a layer of pond water. I always carry two two liter bottles of water on our hikes. And Kathy had her own. We finished them all off before we got to the Lighthouse.
Luckily, they sell water at the top!
There were a group of School kids already there. Maybe eight or nine of them. Both girls and boys, and they had soaked completely through their uniforms. Well, they didn't have "mucho dinero" or pesos to buy any drinks. So we bought them all water (they turned down sodas!) and a small bag of chips for each of them. The two that could speak English thanked us over and over again. When we bought them some water to take with them on the hike down, they were over the moon.
So Kathy and rest for a while and start the trek back down. It went a bit easier than the trek up, but almost as long (we were in our early fifties). When we got to the bottom of the big hill - there was the group of kids, and a smiling older couple next to a nice car. A car with Air conditioning in it!
It turns out one of the kids called his parents from the pay phone in a restaurant near the bottom of the hill and told his Mom and Dad about the nice Gringo Couple. The Parents both spoke English. They got in their car, drove down to the Lighthouse, and picked us up. The kids continued to hang out with the other kids on their way home. We rode in comfort.
That couple showed us around town, took us to their little sailboat, and we went for a quick sail. Then they took us to a local eatery and we had - for the first time- Chicken Mole. I don't drink alcohol and that surprised them. He made us laugh when he said: "How do you make friends without beer?"
Then they took us to a Supermercardo to get some odds and ends. Drove us back to our ship in plenty of time to get back onboard.
That was a good day in Mexico! Muy Bueno!

I used to enjoy visiting Mexico. Not so sure I would do so these days.
