What do you all think about this... Are there some leaders so toxic that they overpower the overwhelming amount of good leadership, or are there actually more toxic leaders than good ones?

I blame our current promotion Step program. Soldiers are being forced to be promoted too quick when they aren't ready to be NCOs quite yet. Also doesn't help that "Everyone is a leader" mindset is enforced, because thats just so unrealistic. Not everyone is cut out to be a leader, doesn't mean they are bad soldiers though. IDK just my two cents.

I do agree to a point that Soldiers get promoted before they're ready but sometimes, you need to have your feet held to the fire. If there's a good leader mentorship program within your unit(s), this could fix some of that. In terms of the Army, I think we don't empower our NCO's enough and let them lead nor do we hold them accountable when things don't go right. Part of being a good leader is to understand how your people work and knowing what your own strengths and weaknesses are, and working on them. You also want to bring those under your charge up to your level someday because let's face it, they will likely replace their leaders one day.

CW3 Michael Bodnar - I have noticed some constants due to toxic leadership. They make you miserable at work and rarely say thank you. The troops deserve leaders who give a damn about them. I have noticed leaders who care about the troops, but don't know how to show it. My rant is over.

I think a good leader will insulate the troops from toxic leadership.

It's a tough situation to be in. I've been I do my best to shield my Soldiers from top level BS all the time. I actually confronted a toxic leader right after I became a Warrant and she was floored and quite upset with me for bringing that to her attention. The good thing about it though is she did change her ways. We still talk today and she comes to me for advice on many different topics.
