If I had to choose only 1 of those 12, it would be Personal Finance. It astounded me the level if fiscal naiveté that many of my Soldiers showed with absolutely no thought beyond the here and now.

COL Randall C. I agree that personal finance should be top of the list. During my civilian career, I held brown bag lunches to help my co-workers with their 401Ks and other money management topics.

What are you saying COL Randall C.? That Soldiers going out to purchase a 2012 Dodge Charger for $12,000 at 34% is fiscal irresponsibility? Say it ain't so?

MSG (Join to see) - You'd figure they could at least get it down to 30%, but Nooooo.

In my first unit after OBC, my Intel Clerk (call him PFC Smith) married his true love (the exotic dancer he met a little over a month prior) and became the father of her 18-month old child as part of the union. Surprisingly (I mean, he obviously showed great judgment up to this point...), his previously under control financial issues started to spin out of control.

My NCO and I worked with him to get his fiscal house in order, which included getting him an AER debt consolidation loan, a savings plan to put money away for the future and a budget for him to live within.

After he was back on the straight and narrow for a little over a month he ran into financial issues again. Why? He decided that his not-yet-two-years-old son needed a complete set of encyclopedias so he would be better set for his education...

Keep in mind, PFC Smith was the Intelligence Clerk in the Battalion's S-2 section. It wasn't until a number of years later that I heard the phrase that applied to him - "You can't fix stupid."

A lot of these were taught when I was in school. Boxing was discontinued just before I entered High School because a student was killed in the ring.

And Boxing Is Far Less Dangerous Than Foot Ball.
But Foot Ball Brings In Money Whereas Boxing Doesn't, If Any Funds At All.. ~
