TONIGHT's Topic: "Fire When Ready!"

"On May 1, 1898, at the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War, Admiral George Dewey spoke the words, "You may fire when ready, Gridley", thus initiating one of the most decisive naval battles in US history. With these words, Admiral Dewey had given the responsibility of firing the first shot of the battle to Captain Gridley, sequestered in Olympia's conning tower. What was unusual was that Captain Gridley was suffering from dysentery and what appeared to be liver cancer in the stifling heat of the confines of the tower.

That being said, Captain Gridley gave the fire command regardless of his discomfort and kicked off a six-hour battle which resulted in the loss of only one American and soundly defeated the Spanish Armada.

Often, as sufferers of PTSD and depression, we are put in the same position as Captain Gridley. Weak, struggling, suffering, and battling our own internal demons, we are tasked to proceed with pressing on with life. This is when we must do as Captain Gridley did and "fire when ready". We must muster our courage, gather our strength, bolster our confidence, and press on with the battle.

How do we press on though when facing overwhelming odds? How do we "Fire when Ready"? to press on with battles when we are at our weakest?" — Air Force Veteran Steven Bates

Join Air Force veteran and author Steven Bates during Mid-Week Musings with the Warriors for Life Support Group tonight as we discuss the Battle of Manila Bay, Admiral Dewey, Captain Gridley, and how we can use their examples to "Fire when Ready" in our own lives when needed most during our own battles."
