More information will be coming out on the DoD web pages as the final touches are placed on the new retirement system. An AC calculator is in the works, RC/Guard will follow as the calculations are more complicated.

I still think that the federal government is passing the buck (i.e. responsibility) onto the unsuspecting Service Member. After countless presentations on the ward, I have found out that many youngsters have never been presented with basic economics, or an understanding of a checkbook, or just general political knowledge.
Asking them now to put money into funds with little to no knowledge versus a set paycheck is downright wrong. Of course, the notion is to save money, and to pass a little something to those who have served. But let us look at it another way: no other company FORCES you to figure out a way to save, yet the federal government is doing just that. I am still astounded by this result.
I can safely say I will not be encouraging my boys to do 20 years in the military; an initial hitch and then get out.

So I was asked to speak to some AIT students about Network Operations. After I completed that I did an Q&A with no subject off limits. I frankly asked them if they got a financial readiness class in basic training. Apparently they do now and they talk about retirement savings.
Still, its hard to expect an 18 year old out and about on their own for the first time to think 20+ years out.

The message is pay containment wrapped in a pretty package. This is merely a way to ease the pain of being dismissed.
