Im currently in the Nat'l Guard with an ETS fast approaching, I'd like to reclass to 25B (to help my military and civilian career). I've have held a similar MOS when I was active duty/guard previously, currently there is nothing available on the Guard side within the state for this MOS, Im having to reassign with the Reserves, they have several slots, and re-enlist, because I want to make sure my RPAM reflects a good 20 years of service.
My questions are: With no formal educational training beyond high school, is there anything I can do to prepare myself for the 25B AIT besides the usual soldiering skills? Im talking like classes, certifications etc., something that might give me an edge on the class. What can I expect from AIT once I've graduated? Will there be any job placement/assistance? or back to hitting the bricks? I havent seen anything updated on this particular MOS in quite a while, so any guidance/headsup would be greatly appreciated!

As a former 25B, they're basically going to shove you through 2 years worth of Community College in 19 weeks and will keep telling you "that's OJT" or "You'll learn that at your unit."
It's a good starting point but don't expect anything too great. Also, pursue the civilian certifications to attain success in an IT career. I was an IT guy for 6 years.

Thanks for the head-up, I dont mind being shoved through school again, it will be a good change of pace and get me out of the rut Im in with my current unit/MOS.
Do I have to pay for all the civilian certifications I attain or is there some kind of reimbursement? Will the military recognize those and apply them to my PQR?

Yes, most of the time you do. Unless you're going to work for some companies that reimburse you. Many of these companies will pay for your certs if you agree to stay. Those certs are treated like college credit and will benefit you as far as promotions go and stuff, I believe. The MOS school won't get you even real close to the knowledge you need for most of those certs, but I would say talk to your instructors and if they're really knowledgeable, they will absolutely tell you what you need to get there. I highly recommend going for the certs if you're planning on making IT a career.

I don't know where this young man is hearing that 25B isn't available in the National Guard. Of course each state's force structure is different, but if thisSoldier.is roperating solely on info from an Active Duty Retention NCO, he may not be getting the full benefit of familiarity with the Guard that is available in the recruiting force of the state he plans to end up in. I suggest he contact the state HQ for whatever state he's going to and talk to the in-service recruit coordinator.

COL Smith--truly...heck, even as an Honorary Colonel in the Alabama National Guard/Reserve (not the more common militia thing) I get updates and have inquired.

The slots may be unavailable, the 25B MOS has seen some very high popularity in the last few years. I had a hard time ISTing in the Guard because of a lack of slots.

It wasn't unusual to find a "promotion" slot in another state....rough though. Not everyone can do it--expensive, time, travel...
