It does not surprise me in the least this happened. These are several generations of people still alive today that had or still have membership in the KKK. Most are still hiding either by hood or by deception.

Interesting story. I could almost read it as a "Conversion on the Road to Damascus"; a story of redemption. But, there seems to be a missing element of atonement. Not exactly redemption and atonement of the Catholic tradition; the satisfaction of Christ. Rather, that of Rabbinic Judaism which includes restitution. No atonement in Yom Kippur without reconciling with the fellow man who was wronged.
He may be able to rationalize some kind of redemption via dogma. He may believe he has atoned by changing his life, but I can't buy it when those he wronged are there, available for him to make restitution in some way.
