Part II: The final word on my Zenni’s.

I received my order within ten days as promised (nine to be exact) via FedEx shipping. The order was packaged in a thick padded mailer, but sturdy enough. The glasses themselves arrived each in their own blue plastic case with a matching microfiber cloth. The cases were basic, a bit on the cheaper side, but free. All in all, the presentation was quite nice, especially for bargain glasses. I couldn’t wait to try them on as the coating on my current glasses was literally peeling off, leaving a visible zigzagged line through my field of vision. Those glasses served me well though, I would say give or take eight years by this point, but new glasses were way overdue.

My old glasses were from America’s Best. I’ve been a loyal customer of theirs for some time now, but even their prices are not cheap by any means. As the situation with my income has changed dramatically in the near decade since my last order, I wanted to pay less, and this is how I discovered Zenni Optical. I did take advantage of America’s Best’s “Eye Care Club” for my prescription as you can’t beat the three years (one complete eye exam allowed every six months) of eye exams for $99. By law any optical shop providing a prescription for glasses or contacts must provide a copy upon demand. This is an interesting fact as if you go most anywhere else in the world, any optician could provide you with a prescription for glasses in about ten minutes, but we like to complicate things here in the states. We also have congressional lobbyists with very deep pockets.

The overall quality of my new glasses was better than expected. The designs seemed nicer in person than compared to what I saw online. The frames seemed sturdy and were light weight. Upon trying them on, I discovered that the nose pads were a bit on the tight side, but Zenni has an entire page on their website dedicated to adjusting your glasses. I quickly made a couple of adjustments, and they fit well. No additional adjustments were needed once I got the nose pads into just the right place. My vision was crisp and clear with my new glasses. I wasn’t worried as much about the lenses as I was regarding my new prescription factoring into glasses that I cannot easily go back to the shop to have a lens replaced if they were off in the prescription itself. This turned out to be a non-issue.

I opted for the Blokz Photochromic lenses (their version of Transitions, but about half the price) and the blue light blocking was interesting as I could notice even a greenish-blue reflection when looking at my glasses in the mirror, but even with this reflection being visible from the mirror I could see without any noticeable change in color or difficulty. They also threw in a blue laser pointer to show just how radically the blue light is blocked with their special lenses. It was rather entertaining to literally see the effects, it really works, but whether the blue light blocking will play any actual roll in my health is to be determined. It can’t hurt though. I tested the photochromic capabilities of the lenses a couple days later and they change from nearly clear to about 80% gray in just under two minutes. This was marginally slower than the name brand Transitions lenses, but again far more inexpensive and they include blue light blocking. Overall I am very satisfied with my choice in lenses.

I decided to wait a couple of weeks to post my follow-up to be fair about my thoughts on the overall experience buying glasses from Zenni. It did take a slight adjustment period to get used to wearing new glasses, but this is going to be the case almost anytime one changes to a new pair of glasses. The adjustment period was minimal. I also made a tweak here and there to the fitting, especially to the nose pads, but they fit well and are very true to size. After roughly two weeks in my new Zenni’s I have no complaints, and I would most definitely buy from them again, even if I just wanted a pair of prescription sun glasses or the like. They definitely have the manufacturing process down to a science. I hope it stays this way and the glasses last for at least as long as my old pairs did, but even if I get a new prescription I am not worried as the price was more than fair.

They most definitely won my trust and business over. I will post an update if something changes, but at this point I think that it’s safe to say that I most definitely got more than I bargained for. The military/veteran discount was just icing on the cake, but as it factors into an even more substantial savings for us types that are members of the RP community, I couldn’t help, but to share my story with buying glasses online. I also plan on checking out Vision Direct in the UK for contact lenses at some point, but for now, I am very satisfied with my new glasses.
