I have a couple of registered personal firearms and my wife has a couple as well. Will we be able to take them when we PCS? Are there any processes that we need to be aware of regarding registering them for on base housing?
Thanks in advance!

If you are going to be living on-post, you will have to register them with the post PMO. You will be able to keep them in your on-post residence, but you cannot transport them, with the exception of taking them off-post to shoot, and then back on post to *directly* return them to your quarters.
If you will be living off-post, then there is no restriction or registration necessary.
If you live in barracks, you will have to register your firearms, and keep them in the company arms room. Or you can not disclose you own them (unless there is a local policy that requires you report all firearms owned), and keep them off post in a storage facility.

Thanks for the detailed response!
I presume that registering in that manner applies to my wife's firearms as well as mine.
Do you know if it is the OCONUS or what changes for an OCONUS deployment?

This is spot on and I will add you need to know the state laws of where you are living. OCONUS includes Hawaii and Alaska and they are very different. It is my understanding if you PCS to Canada you can get paperwork to drive with them from CONUS to Alaska but I am not certain. I would recommend registering all weapons secured in on post housing with PMO regardless who owns them as I do not believe it matters. Do some checking at the post you are PCSing to and see if that is a loophole. Even if it is, you would need paperwork bringing them back on post to your residence.

You may want to reach out to the overseas command/provost Marshall and with your local transportation office. Some overseas assignments you cannot ship weapons so verify with transportation on whether or not you can ship. SPC Josh Tharp

I have never known a base to allow personal firearms in Base Housing. Only secured in the unit Arms Room. Contact your base Provost Marshal office and they will be able to answer that question with certainty.

I lived on post at:
Fort Drum
Fort Benning
Fort Campbell
Fort Leavenworth
At each one, I was permitted to have my firearms in my on-post quarters.

Family housing, yes. Barracks, company or POW arms room at lnstallation. Check with the PM, but you usually need to register them with the PM

SSG(P) (Join to see) - Back in my day at Irwin and Landstuhl, no weapons in family housing was allowed. Clearly some things have changed.

MSG (Join to see) - I believe it was also up to the Post commander.
During my career, I lived in on-base housing (at least for awhile) at Ft. Carson, Ft. Richardson, and Ft. Lewis. I had firearms at all of them No problem.
