Thank you CW5 Jack Cardwell for letting us know that the "Department of Homeland Security plans to get rid of all its 7.62mm NATO, or .308 caliber, long-range rifle ammunition and replace it with an intermediate caliber that Special Operations snipers will field next year"
That is interesting since the US Army is considering adding yet another caliber 6.8mm. Too many types of rounds will be hard to support logistically although it would help in forensics to determine who shot the round :-)

Not entirely sure why DHS needs sniper rounds, the wall after all.

Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen - When I went to the Special Operations conference on September 11, 2002 as I was browsing through the exhibits and talking to the special operators, I had a conversation with an FBI sniper with his tools-of-the trade displayed. Outside there was a SEAL exhibit and I spent some time talking with the SEAL sniper. I mentioned an FBI sniper was inside. He was thrilled. The sniper community is close as they train together and occasionally operate together. 6 six later I talked with some Ranger snipers when my son was inducted into 3rd Battalion 75th Ranger Regiment in April 2008.

I like the 6.5 CM, it is a great round. But this is a huge waste of money. Someone just wants the newest latest toys.
Most Law Enforcement sniper shootings take place at less than 100 yards. Where the 6.5 CM really shines over the .308 (or 7.62x51) is beyond 1,000 yards. That performance is just not needed for DHS mission. Unless they are planning on shooting border crossers from mountain tops.

I have to agree with that statement. Long distance shooters/snipers all seem to be addicted to dating the new girl in school. How many of these cartridges have came along in the last 20 years?

I still think that the .308 is a good round to learn on. It get's pushed around a bit, and it drops like a rock compared to other cartridges... Maybe I'm just sentimental.

SSG(P) (Join to see) - I would say your being logical. I'm guessing they are planning on shorter ranges for future engagements.
