There are 2.3 million Americans working for the federal government in civilian jobs, a tally that has steadily climbed as control of the White House has shifted between parties and presidents.
They constitute less than 2% of the total U.S. workforce. They work as everything from nurses in Veterans Affairs hospitals and park rangers in Yellowstone to guards in federal prisons and the 19 employees of the Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board. About 80% of them work outside of the Washington, D.C., region.
Many of the jobs could become targets of the proposed Department of Government Efficiency, the entity President-elect Donald Trump has said will trim costs under the direction of billionaire industrialist Elon Musk and biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy. Musk has told people—possibly in jest—that more than half of the government’s employees should be fired.

They should start in the Pentagon … why does a 4 star get 2 aids in the field and 12-14 aids in the Pentagon. They are not called Aides they are called Staff Action Control Officers but there are way to many of them. The civilian roles need to be reduced and in many cases eliminated. If you can’t pass an audit you have no value to the organization.

I agree there is a lot of overlap in many government positions. We could use a few more in FEMA that have some commo sense though.

There is so many departments that have overlapping authority. Just that act alone of merging and reducing could cut gvmt size 10% estimated

This "possibly in jest" stuff about policy making that many consider to be threats gets old fast - from any one, particularly politicians and who they present as their close advisors. Government work is serious stuff. What is said should never have to be interpreted as either a threat or a "possible jest". Government is different than business in that way, where people say things to illicit responses to gauge public opinion.
We need good leadship in government not manipulative business ploys.
Hoping the next administration matures into moving past this type of guessing game that creates mistrust. I have serious doubts it will has the will to do so.<sigh>
