The free market of ideas depends on facts and truth and the ability of those in it to distinguish and dismiss disinformation and misinformation. The studies around this topic are simply fascinating. And you don't need the heavy hand of a government to counter mis/disinformation, but something does need to be done to limit it's impact. Unfortunately that's not an easy task. It includes, as you say, educating the masses of critical thinking, but also encouraging the masses to counter, in full force, those who stir discontent. I'm sure there are those who study these things that have more ideas on how to respond.

I think Elon Musk does a good job on 'X' allowing anyone to add a community comment to posts. It does a decent job of identifying misleading or wrong information. But caveat emptor! Let the buyer beware! We are all of us responsible for checking our facts. It never hurts to check twice!

MAJ Montgomery Granger - As long is there is no mucking from on high and enough people knowledgeable enough participating, that does work best. There are times when that will not be enough, similar to the yelling fire in a crowded theater carve out of free speech. It's one thing to post opinionated information and let people soak that in, but it's entirely different when the information is patently false and it's posting causes harm to others.

It is more the lack of critical thinking skills, you are correct about that. The so called 'elites' keep Americans distracted which keeps them divided. Divided populations are easier to rule.
