Picked the grandkids up and took them to McDonald's as a treat. (Oh Man, I had sticker shock when the bill came up!) During our meal we chatted. I brought up the simple fact that the biggest animals on Earth are all Vegetarians. At least on Land. I was fairly certain that the Blue Whale is also a vegetarian, but Sperm whales eat meat...so wasn't sure about water animals.

That led to why some vegetarian animals are so strong and violent, like: Hippo's, Rhino's, and Elephants. But most predators are not quite as big, but usually quicker and faster. And so I asked them:

"Well, what kills the most people in Africa?"

They chimed out like they rehearsed it:

"Mosquitoes, It isn't even close. And mosquitos kill folks everywhere in the world except in cold places."

So that led to another interesting discussion. What are the deadliest animals in Africa. So we had to GOOGLE. And man, we were surprised. Lions, for example, barely made the top ten! And in the top five, the only "animal" was a Crocodile.
Well, two snakes made the top five, and I guess those are Animals too. Reptiles anyway. And the big killers?

Mosquitos and Tse Tse Flies. were first and fourth. Two and three were snakes, the Puff Adder, and the Black Mamba. The former kills by accident, most folks just don't see it and step on it. And if bitten, goodbye Human. The Black Mamba will actually chase humans! And it can run, slither, or whatever the heck you call it at over 12 miles an hour! That is fast enough to catch the average person. Especially by surprise. That's a five minute mile pace! So there go your Offensive Linemen, and weak cardio folks.

We all decided that the Silver Back was the best combination of brawn and vegetarian. LOL And so our talk ended. Except for this gem from my grandson.

"If I was a chicken I wouldn't go anywhere near a McDonald's sign."

We all did. Those kids are smart. I would’ve guessed the Lions would’ve been much higher than ninth of the top 10 killers. And we had a little kerfuffle with the math. I told them that a quarter back when I was going to McDonald’s as a kid That a quarter is not worth $5.40. So today’s McDonald’s meal cost $50 so we spent a while trying to figure out what that $50 would’ve meant back in 1959. They thought they could just multiply 540 and came up with $10 for the mail back then , so that was tricky.

SGT Kevin Hughes - Thinking outside the box! Great way to get them to start using their brains to analyze things. That will work to their benefit later.

My kids used to worry about bears and mountain lions. I told them ticks and mosquitoes probably caused more illness than bears etc.

We had bears in Ohio, but not where I lived ...just Browns. Sorry, bad joke. There are still black bears around, and apparently they are becoming a bit of a problem. No mountain lions, but my friend in West Virginia, says they have spotted a few there. I agree with you, I have seen many people struggle to heal from tick born and mosquito bites, but I only know two people attacked by bears! And both of them were Park Rangers. I don't know anyone attacked by a lion. Down here, gators are the most likely culprit after Mosquitos and ticks. Rednecks come in a distant fourth.
