"There’s an App for That!" Warriors for Life (WFL) Virtual Group Support with Dr. Karen Wall!

https://www.victoryforveterans.org/blog/there-s-an-app-for-that-warriors-for-life-wfl-virtual-group-support-with-dr-karen-wall

Join COL (Ret) Mikel Burroughs and special Guest our very own RallyPoint MAJ (Ret) Doctor Karen Wall for this Saturday evening's Warriors for Life (WFL) Virtual Group Support Community Services. You don't want to miss Dr. Wall's presentation!

Saturday Night's Topic: There’s an App for That: Using Mobile Apps to Augment Treatment for PTSD, TBI, and other service-related problems.

“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic” - Arthur C. Clarke

We veterans, and active military, like our care quick, convenient, and discreet- like our mobility in combat. . Mobile mental health apps are becoming more and more abundant and available, and with the increase in the number of HIPPA-compliant apps being introduced, clinicians have an ethical obligation to consider the use of these apps to help their clients take control of their health. Mobile apps go everywhere with the client, so they can check in between appointments or whenever they feel the need for support. Their provider has selected appropriate, evidence-based, mobile apps for them to help manage their specific symptoms. Mobile technology allows clients to be in the community, at home, anywhere, to use wellness tools to help with their stress and anxiety related to their issues. Mobile technology also allows clients to have a connection to their healthcare team, a sort of transitional object (Lopez, 2013).

MAJ (Ret) Karen Wall EdD, MA, RN-BC, OFS, LMFT
Quartermaster Corps 1982-1993 (incl Desert Shield/Storm)
Army Nurse Corps, 66C (Psych RN) 1993-2005

Karen is Japanese-Irish, born in Japan where her father was stationed with the Air Force, and married her Japanese mother. She was raised in Hawaii, a military brat. She has two sisters, one who lives in Alaska and one in North Carolina; and three brothers, two in Hawaii and one deceased. Of the six, four have been in the military, and three have been in combat. Her father was in three wars- WWII, Korea, and Viet Nam; her brother served in Viet Nam, and she served in Desert Storm. There has been a Wall in every war in which this country has ever been involved, back to COL Richard Sparks in the Revolutionary War as a Ranger/Indian Scout.

Karen began her military in high school, being in ROTC the whole time. She started her college career at New Mexico Military Institute, in Roswell, NM, and was commissioned a 2LT in 1982, the start of her formal military career. For the first half of her career, she worked in supply and logistics, including a deployment to Saudi Arabia in support of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm while she was in nursing school. After nursing school, she changed jobs and went into the Army Nurse Corps, which is where she stayed for the remainder of her career. She trained at the Army’s Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Specialty Course, and was stationed in Fort Gordon, GA; Tripler, HI; Fort Carson, CO; eventually coming to CA and retiring in 2005 with the rank of Major after 23 years of commissioned service.

Karen recently retired from the VA as a mental health nurse and was the Dementia Care Coordinator for the Community Living Centers at the Palo Alto VA. She provided support, training, consultation, and coaching for the staff working with veterans who live in the CLC and who live with dementia, mental illness, and traumatic brain injuries. Karen had been with the VA since 2006, working with inpatient and outpatient mental health, and nursing education. As a veteran, she enjoyed being at the VA where she can still be close to the military and relate to the patients.

She received her Doctor of Education (EdD) degree from Argosy University in Counseling Psychology, her dissertation being about religion and spirituality in counseling. She has a MA degree in Counseling Psychology/Marriage and Family Therapy, and has a private practice doing telebehavioral health and psychotherapy using online platforms and mobile apps. Karen specializes in military/veterans mental health, geriatric mental health and dementia care, PTSD, and animal assisted therapy/service dogs. She has a BS in Nursing from York College of PA, and a BS in Biology from Texas Tech University; a PD(MA) in Secondary Education from University of Hawaii, and an AA in Pre-Med from New Mexico Military Institute. One of her passions is teaching lay persons about the neuroanatomy of mental illness and dementia, and prior to retiring, she started an education program for family members of her veterans who have dementia.

Karen recently relocated to ABQ, NM after retirement, wanting to be close to her alma mater NMMI and her alumni family here. She is involved in her Parish at Holy Family as a member of the choir and is a member of the Secular Franciscan Order.
