We've been an All Volunteer Force for 45 years. Let me repeat that. We've been an ALL VOLUNTEER FORCE for more than 4 decades. There is no one currently serving who was drafted.
I'm sure that Drafting (Conscription) has "some" valid place within our military, however... if we can go 45 of our 231 years (Constitution was ratified on June 21, 1788) or the most recent 20% of our history without needing a Draft, we can probably get by without one.
Furthermore, it's not like we can't just change the law back. We don't need "Selective Service Registration." We are already assigned a number at birth or immigration. It's called a Social Security Number. The US government knows where to find us because we pay taxes... We fill out I9s already. All they have to do is put out a "cattle call" (all hands aged 18-26 show up X).
Now for my ethical issues. Should the US government be able to "Seize" and use an American citizen's life? I get that it's for the defense of the homeland...blah, blah, blah... except, Vietnam and Korea (the two most recent Drafts weren't). I really have a problem with Congress having the ability to Draft people without a formal declaration of War, let alone without an actual threat to the US itself.

Great response, I wish I could thumb up it multiple times.
I’d only add that having served with both genders... gender doesn’t mean squat.
Sure, there are decidedly fewer 6’3” females that can bench 300lbs, but we aren’t a country of farm boys anymore, and if we fight a war that involves a “cannon fodder” charge (on our side), we’re gonna loose.
Way too many people that won’t get off their ass to improve themselves, much less charge into the gates of hell for god and country.
Women might actually have the edge in that charge these days, he’ll hath no fury and all that.

It's called involuntary servitude. Usually does not go over well with most people.

SPC David Hannaman - That's what technology is for. To bridge the gap in physical weaknesses. Human physical weaknesses. WWII had 20M+ troops. We now have less than 2M.

Make it simple. Put a stake in the ground. Everyone should register for Selective Service. Period. No discrimination. Equal opportunity - to be drafted. All of our recruits are green. And as a Marine, meaning amphibious, all of recruits don't have a sex either. Got that tadpole?! Amphibious green blurs.
Since we've not had a draft since the 70s, the need for a draft would have to be pretty severe. But having the majority of the work force to pull from you could pull a lot of well trained civilians to back fill technical and medical jobs while worrying how to put together a fighting force. I am decades past "allowing" women to serve shoulder to shoulder. I take a beating in the civilian world because of my white privileged toxic masculinity.

Interesting article.
I don't want my daughters in a draft.
It does make sense with equality standards.
