SGT (Join to see) William Manchester’s book, Goodbye Darkness left me with the impression that the fighting of the Betio Atoll was actually the worst of Tarawa.
One old timer spoke of being on an approach march there. The Marine directly in front of him completely vanished when he was blown up by incoming, my acquaintance, “Al”, said that he simply collapsed in place from the sight.
