I've read the accounts of several who liberated concentration camps. It is impossible that those who lived nearby didn't know.

Exactly so--no matter what the likes of David Irving may say. Ike was right to get every GI possible to go through the camps, and for forcing German civilians and politicians to help with the cleanup . . .

One of my HS buddies Dad’s Liberated a Camp. He said they accidentally killed some of those poor folks by feeding them to much to soon. He said one of the most joyful moments he witnessed was when a bunch of Soldiers gave shampoo, brushes and combs to the women. When they realized they could safely shower, and take time to do each other’s hair, they looked like little kids no matter how old they were. And then they got lipstick and makeup …well, he said it was just a joy to watch. And that is the only story he ever told about the Camp. He simply said: “ Evil exists…and it is us.”
