Hi from the customs/immigration guy. My recollection of dealing with veterans who could face deportation, is there is a much higher standard that prosecution must present. Some minor drug charges, DUI no injuries, traffic tickets.... But anything violent, domestic, trafficking, and fraud are big time no no's. These veterans go to court and see a judge and have counsel. There is an appeal process.
But it is a good question? Should VA work with State department to allow these veterans a severely limited visa to cross the border for healthcare only? Again, case by case.... No good answer, nor panacea

SPC George Rudenko thank you for weighing in, 'from the field' of practical experience and knowledge. I could foresee the San Diego VAMC shuttle system or the Chula Vista VA South Clinic adding a San Ysidro Border Crossing stop to its route.

Didn't a previous post talk about how some of these vets were supposed to fill out paperwork to become citizens, but didn't? If that is true, and there are no extenuating circumstances, it's extremely unfortunate, but it is what it is. If they DID and it was the typical military "loss of paperwork" then we should err on the side of the vet and bring their asses home. They MORE than deserve it.

SSG Warren Swan according to this most recent article, apparently all of these deported veterans are also convicted felons and therefore disqualified from pursuing citizenship. In other words, the reason for being deported is due to their felony conviction(s). They could have maintained their 'green card' status but that changed upon having a felony conviction.

Damn Good Query Chief. I think looking at them on a case by case bases would be appropriate.

PO1 William "Chip" Nagel I would hope a fellow veteran would be part of the decision-making process should it ever come to that. Hate to see most any vet sentenced to life in Mexico (personal experience).

CPO Andy Carrillo, MS - I just admired Mexico from Afar just across the Wall at Imperial Beach. That is all the closer I needed to get!
