I believe our victory at Iwo Jima signaled that our overall victory over Japan was imminent, but it also signaled that the Japanese would fight us to the death and our victory would be costly. I'm sure that this battle, and the cost in lives of our victory there, weighed heavily in Truman's decision to end the war with the dropping of the atomic bombs a few months later. My uncle fought here, and carried tiny pieces of shrapnel in his back for the rest of his life. The raising of the flag on Iwo Jima was a defining moment in Marine Corps history......may the brave men that died there, rest in eternal peace.

Yes Sir, on Guam we all remember the US Marines and other services. The US marines landed on Guam July 21, 1944, to liberate the island. Every year on July 21st the island celebrates Liberation Day. The main highway from Anderson AFB north, to Naval Station Guam south, is name after the US Marines, the highway is call, "Marine Corps Drive." Salute!
