During our carrier qualification at Pensacola, they took us all out on the Lexington to observe some reservists doing requals in A-4s. One of the aircraft was high but caught a wire, slamming the nose of the aircraft onto the deck, breaking the aircraft in two. I think it had the effect of us all paying a little closer to procedures during our practice approaches at Barin Field in preparation for our first hits. Lots of variables with limited time to respond

PO3 Kemp Pheley - Sounds as though you did more than your share! You have to remember gravity has a lot to do with any landing.

I was stationed on the lexington late 70’s early 80’s on the catapult crew,,we trained those pilots straight out of Pensacola for their first carrier landing and cat shots...I have stories. I saw bail outs, panic on cat shots, broken landing gear with tires rolling up the deck,

Bridget Winters - Had the opportunity to "fly" a modern simulator a few years ago. Quite a change from the 60s when I did my initial carqual. At that time the "link" trainers consisted primarily of learning to scan the instruments to maintain altitude. airspeed, and heading. No visual cues like the new trainers.

I was a young photo striker at Barin Field in 1956 when two trainees collided above the base. Both killed lot of damage, photo lab personnel were there almost as long as crash crews and investigators. A mess. I was not privy to any of the pictures, but sure they are in file somewhere in DC.
