PO3 Sandra Gomke - I can kind of see how that would happen with the media being civilians speaking to other American civilians. We're in a macro-military community here so it's not surprising that we also consider military actions when we think about shootings. I wouldn't expect the media or citizens to take these into consideration - though they probably should. Good point.

PO3 Sandra Gomke This was actually just posted this morning. http://www.theatlantic.com/news/archive/2016/06/orlando-deadliest-mass-shooting/487058/?utm_source=atltw
Was Orlando the Deadliest Mass Shooting in U.S. History?
And even if it is, does that title matter?

SSG Carlos Madden in the US I believe so, however in Norway there was a guy a couple of years ago who killed 77. He was given the max sentence ... 20 years.

Thanks for reminding us PO3 Sandra Gomke that there have been many mass executions in this nation. In the 17th to 19th centuries farmers and ranchers fought the natives and were massacred at times in wagon trains, encampments, in their homes, etc. The militia and later the Army exacted revenge on the guilty and the innocent at times.
In the Civil War massacre of freed black Union soldiers and the revenge by other Black union soldiers on confederate forces particularly in the western theater of operations was all too common in 1863 and in 1864 - Fort Pillow come readily to mind. That war had partisans, guerillas, and common criminals wreaking death and destruction in the border states and wherever law was not present.
Instead of thinking of Wahhabi doctrine inspired killers as civilians they should be considered partisans or whatever the appropriate term in now.
These people believe they are fighting a Holy war just like the Al Qaeda operatives who killed many using airplanes did in 2001.
The POTUS wants to reduce or eliminate guns which is why he and others of like mind focus on guns. The real issue is not guns but ideology.

One could also add The Washita 1868 (40-150 killed) and Sand Creek 1864 (70-160 killed).
