Currently working in NATO where many countries operate in direct contrast to our system. Definitely good and bad thingas, but overall the professionalism and competence of the individual SM is high.

SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL I think it would be a potentially good idea if teh military services would separate retention from promotion as long as separation for cause is still available.
Many of us remember how hard it was to terminate the career of civil servants who were performing substandard for lengthy periods of time.

The senior leadership continues to gut technical expertise out of the service structure under the assumption that we can contract out technical expertise and support. The up or out system makes the problem worse by pushing out the technical expertise. With continued downsizing I don't see this will change, it will likely be accelerated.
For officers the mandatory retirement date takes me out of the Reserve system while I could have served 10 more years.

Agreed. In my case, I became a SgtMaj @ 18years which was on average about 5-6 years ahead of my peer group. I had four successful tours at the Bn/Sdn, Group and Regimental level in addition to serving as a CJTF SgtMaj. When I retired last year, I had been the senior enlisted Marine in MARFORRES for nearly two years. I hit 30 and I had to retire. There was no reason for me to go other than the arbitrary number. The overall problem lies in that the military now views the career path as if it should have equal outcome vs. equal opportunity. When they force out performers, they create vacancies that MUST be filled. You cannot have units without commanders or 1stSgts/SgtsMaj/CMCs/CCMsgts. Most service members simply do not have the skill set for those positions. As a result, weak leaders move into positions they are not suited for. As a result, you see large numbers of commanders and senior enlisted advisers getting relieved for cause. It doesn't mean they cannot serve in some capacity, they just lack the capability to serve in command billets. If there was a separate career path for technicians, it would provide them with a path to serve within their strengths and also improve the quality of those in the command billet pool.
