My father-in-law, 1LT Ed Grenchus had a similar experience when flying his B17G "Fack Shack" over Germany on April 7, 1945. He ordered the bailout, and when he got to that door up front near the navigator/bombardier stations, he looked out and thought to himself "I don't want to jump. I can land this thing." Then he looked back towards the fuselage and saw it was all aflame and the fire was growing. He jumped.
