I'm not a virologist or epidemiologist. However, I suspect that most contagions "burn out" after the affected population "pays" for immunity in the form of lost lives. Modern medicine has discovered ways to combat them and lower the "price"... if not discount it altogether. However, we are probably being naive not to accept that these diseases exist for a reason. Humanity has gradually consolidated on ever-larger metro population centers, disconnected itself from the natural world, and sterilized our living environments while reducing our own natural resistance through various pathology ranging from obesity to stress.
