My father studied engineering there after WWII and ran track (440 high hurdles). It wasn't until the 1960's and the advent of the so-called "Free Speech Movement" that Cal Berkeley became a haven for nut-cases. Irony there is that there is no "free speech" any more at Cal Berkeley. The far-left weirdo's who run the place now won't allow anyone to speak with whom they disagree. Conservative and even moderate speakers are routinely physically attacked or "dis-invited" once the Left learns they're coming.

Absolutely correct. And note that the "protest" back then was conducted in coat and tie. Compare that with the black masks, clubs, firebombs, violence and Nihilist garb that characterize such protests today.
