President Lincoln granted a full pardon for all confederate soldiers and sympathisizers/supporters. Therefore, those that served were also later by Congressional action considered service members in the U.S. Armed forces.

Again, I fail to see how judging the past by modern mores is anything to be considered serious thought. Its easy I guess b/c it fits in with modern PC thought but it's still wrong.
