It is my understanding that the founding fathers wanted religion to inform government and encourage moral behavior in government. That is why one of Washington’s first acts when he took over the Continental Army was to establish the Chaplains Corps. The founding Fathers also put Chaplains in Congress. The founders were concerned about a national church. Many areas already had state established churches.

I believe our founding fathers wanted a state religion, like along the lines of the Church of England. They didn't have an issue with religion in people's daily lives or it being used as a guide.
