So what made this even worse is it happened at a crossing where the trains were asked to run silent and not blow their horns as they approached the crossings (they can only use their horns in an emergency) as you can see in the video attached the engineer does not blow the horn until he sees the car is going to cross. The train goes into emergency braking as soon as he hits the car....look at how long to stop. Also from the drivers perspective he saw the freight clear the crossing and saw the gates still down and decided a stupid manuever to cut line around the stopped cars......the approaching passenger train was blocked from his view by the departing freight train.....then wham.......meet Charles Darwin.

I cannot tell you how rampant a total disregard for safety our SE Florida drivers have. We have a mix of several Caribbean Island driving practices, Central America driving practices, South American driving practices, (really bad) US driving practices (FL, NJ, NY, PA, etc) and Canadian driving practices. The population density is very high. And everyone is in a hurry to get nowhere fast!
Add on top of that - Brightline, running parallel to Dixie Hwy and Tri-Rail, running parallel to I-95 both hit speeds of 80MPH and cross many "minor" streets between stops. Both run on dual tracks (N-bound & S-bound) and service both freight (Brightline) and Amtrack (Tri-Rail) trains - also doing 50-75MPH "through town". Considering "through town" now encompasses Jupiter to the south tip of Florida - or about 100 miles of solid city blocks.

The driver was an idiot attempting to use the downed gate to skip around the line of cars waiting. He saw the frieght train departing the crossing and presumed the gates were down for the frieght train, the passenger train was masked from his view by the frieght train...........see video I posted in my thread above from locomotive cab.
