I tend to agree. Not that having a few F35s around is necessarily a bad thing, but not ALL fighters need to be an F35.

In Army terms, having a Regiment of Rangers available is a great thing. And even having a few Ranger-tabbed Infantrymen floating through your organization is a good thing. But not all Infantrymen need to be Rangers, and not every mission requires a Regiment.

I have done absolutely no research, but I would be willing to wager that the number of TOTAL dogfights in Afghanistan and Iraq throughout the course of the GWOT is less than 2. I would be willing to wager that the total number of AA batteries faced is less than 10. I would even be willing to wager that drone strikes outnumber manned strikes - and that it is not even close.

Yes, we have to be prepared to fight conventional wars. But we do not have to have the ENTIRE inventory focused on conventional wars - especially when currently engaged in unconventional ones.

Why not fix the deficiencies in some of the stuff we have in inventory. We knew the turbine engine in the Abrams was a problem in Desert Storm, too big a heat signature, too much maintenance, and uses too much fuel. It should have been a relatively easy fix, swap it for a modern turbo diesel. We are still running turbine engines in a 44 year old tank.
Or maybe take some of the money from the F35 and look at trying to make parity with the Russian AA guns and missiles? If I were looking at the war in Ukraine, one of the lessons should be that the airspace above a near peer battlefield has become increasingly deadly for Aircraft and that cheap missile make a mess of expensive air frames.

CPT Lawrence Cable because fixing deficiencies is nowhere near as profitable for the MIC.

Pentagon Wars is a great view of this stuff.

I think the F-4 was faster than the F-35. Pathetic. How the hell did they miss the structural inadequacy during testing before production?
