Where I grew up (Maryland) we called them "Snake Doctors". Don't know why. Never knew they ate mosquitoes. Never saw any in Vietnam. Too bad. Might have helped me avoid the malaria I got there. Anyone else see them in Vietnam?

CPT Jack Durish Around our lake here(TN),i grew up calling them "snake doctors" or "mosquito hawks" they were very numerous,but had little effect out the population of mosquitoes there.
I do not remember seeing any in Vietnam,of course i did see a few mosquitoes.

Mosquito hawks and dragonflys (snake doctors) are two different insects. This is a mosquito hawk. Maybe you had a different name for them...

CPT Jack Durish - We called the dragonflys "mosquito hawks" because they were devastating to the mosquitoes and another mosquito-like insect we called "woolies" that had a fuzzy proboscis instead of the needle like one of the mosquito.

I didn't know that either. Maybe we should have imported thousands of them to take care of the mosquitoes.
