Four police officers have given testimony at the opening day of a US Congressional inquiry into the storming of the Capitol by supporters of Donald Trump. They described how they were punched, kicked and racially abused as they tried to defend the building.

One officer said he feared he would be crushed by the mob. Another described how rioters tried to gouge out his eye.

Scott MacFarlane is an investigative reporter for NBC4 Television. He told Newsday the officers want Congress to look at “who sent this mob, who inspired them, who incited them. They want Congress to investigate government officials.”
