The Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe of Michigan is receiving recognition by the U.S. Navy.
Secretary of the Navy Richard Spencer announced that the latest towing, salvage and rescue ship ‘T-ATS 8’ will be named in honor of the tribe.
The ship will be named USNS Saginaw Ojibwe Anishinabek. Ojibwe is a reference to the Chippewa people, which is made up of the Saginaw, Black River, and Swan Creek bands. Anishinabek means “original people.”
