I was never at Fort Ord but it looks like other posts where I trained. I find it interesting that places like this are decaying before our eyes. These wooden barracks might just be monuments to the 20th Century. Veterans of WWI, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam all shared them. Couldn’t they have lasted until the next century when we will all be gone? At least Veterans of the 19th Century didn’t have to witness their monuments destroyed.

I was in Monterey about a year ago and it is all fenced off and the buildings are falling down all over the place. My gosh it is prime real estate and the DoD could make millions of dollars by selling it off...but as of now it is sad to see.

It's sad that they are letting great old building fall into disrepair.

I spent a month in those barracks for BNCOC/CA. They are almost all gone now as is the barracks of my old unit up on the hill. Sad as it was a great post. On a clear night, and there weren't many due to fog, I could see the boardwalk in Santa Cruz from my house on post.
