PO1 Henry Jackson - I tink if you read his biography, plus read his record, you will see he changed his attitude. Perhaps out of his compassion, perhaps for votes. That being said, he also knew with the Civil Rights bill he lost the south to the Republicans. The only difference was, he said the Dems would lose the south for "a generation" when in reality they lost it for ever.

PO3 Bob McCord - I guess he and JFK didn't get along very well either.

Were it not for his handling of the war in Viet Nam, I believe he would be ranked as one of the most effective Presidents in out history.

PO3 Bob McCord - I lost brothers and sisters there also. All America did. I hated that war before and after I went. However, I do not believe we should put all that on LBJ. When he left office, the total KIA was 35,000. Still way too many, true. But what about the Congress through those years? What about Nixon and his "secret peace plan"?
No, there were many, many others that should share the blame for those 58,000.
