My Dad was with Company C 5th Ranger Battalion and they were assigned to Weimar (town Where Buchenwald was) on 11 April 1945 to set up Military Governments and establish law and order in the region. I remember as a kid my dad did not talk a lot about what he did in the war, but every once in awhile he would and he said the stuff he saw at Buchenwald was just unbelievable.

I took a 400 level History Course in college I needed for my degree. I had finished my associates in History with no intention at the time at finishing my BS. I needed a few upper level electives and selected Hitler's Germany. We touched on rise, spread, fall, the why's and what happened. We briefly glossed the camps and I went back and did my own research. It was appalling thinking one human could treat another in such a manner- and to the scale it was carried out was depressing. I tried to understand the mind set of those doing this and could not even begin to understand those persecuted. It still floors me when some groups try to pass this off as over stated or inaccurate. After waging war and all the things the soldiers that liberated the camp endured to get there- it is interesting to note that most willing to talk about it state these places will never be erased from their memory.
