His message is, we have it very very good here in the USA. We have won the lottery of the historical human condition. And, if we don't work at preserving it, the beast of human nature will be free and wild again, and we will lose this wonderful experiment.

I saw his remarks about not descending into the equivalent of tribal warfare.

I agree with Gen Mattis. Since 1775, this country has had it good. But now we are in such a divisive state that so-called "tribalism" - conservatives vs. liberals, Republicans vs. Democrats, and so on ad nauseum - has put our country on the downward slope. I believe our Republic will end up like the Roman Republic and later Empire - increasingly infiltrated by illegal foreign migrants (who will increasingly make up our Armed Forces), and fractured from one country into several regional countries, none of which is strong enough to defend itself. I hope I don't live to see this, but it's clear that our country must hang together, or we'll all hang separately, 1984 style.
