Sgt Joe LaBranche Seeing the Pentagon cited as hide bound, resistant to and fighting changes in the military promotion system is distressing! The book referred to in the article, 'Bleeding Talent' by Kane is distressing to read. Kane, an USAF Academy graduate, goes into great detail about the continuing loss of extremely qualified officers in the military. Kane cites his own experience in attempting to work w/ his own assignment officer. The assignment officer is "quoted" to have said, 'You won't do that, I am calling your bluff'. Kane did resign his Academy granted commission and did his PhD as he wanted!

CSM Charles Hayden In terms of bleeding talent, I don't even think that is a debate. It is just whether the talent being lost is within acceptable ranges.
A few years ago I was having a conversation with another officer and he said we are just a dime a dozen. I didn't think much at the time of it, but the more rigid the system the less personal it is. The reason why the assignments officer called Kane's bluff, is he wasn't that concerned about losing the talent as he can be easily replaced. The system does need an overhaul and a lot of that begins with mindset.

the military is the military. we see corporate America doing things successfully, but those things don't always translate into the military culture. We'll see how it goes though.

I think they need to explore some of the ideas here. There are some really good points in there. Each service, and even each career track within each service has its own set of requirements, opportunities, and standards. Maybe a one size fits all strategy just isn't the right paradigm. Its pretty clear that it wasn't for the the right paradigm for the F-35.
