I Thought the Marine Corps Would Offer a Better Life. It Was Another Place I Didn’t Belong.

I loved the Corps, the perfect start to be an adult. Organization and responsibility.

I had an uncle who was a gunny with nearly 30 years in who lived in Oceanside near Camp Pendleton. We used to go down from Pasadena and visit periodically. He told me if I was thinking about joining the Corps that I shouldn't. He was an ordnance type who became a GS-13 almost immediately after he retired . . .

My dad was a Marine in Korea, he told me the same thing. Don't go in the Corps. So, naturally, I did.
