This is a pretty good article for those who may be transitioning and never had to deal with salary negotiations. Having been an IT person for many years before joining the military, I often had conversations with my soldiers for the purpose of their career development which started with "how much do you value yourself if you were to get a civilian job?" Many of them underestimated their worth, their skills, their training, the value of their clearance, the outside of tech skills qualities they have that the military has given them.
Even now, I was approached by a recruiter for a company and they asked me what it would take for me to leave my current position if they were to offer me a job. I gave them a number. After the interview and they said they were interested in me, their offer was about 7% below what I said it would take me to get me to leave my job and work for them.
