How does CBS compile these figures based on "registered firearms"? Vermont has no registration requirement that I have heard of, except perhaps Federal registration of NFA weapons. New Jersey, as restrictive as it is on 2nd Amendment rights, only requires registration of sidearms, not long guns. Where did they get those numbers?
AH HA!!! I just discovered the "previous" control (<), and sure enough CBS is using NFA registration of guns that fall under NFA registration requirements, AND NO OTHER GUNS -----
Under "Methodology":
"While the ATF's National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record is the only accessible list of its kind, it is not all-inclusive. NFA firearms only include the categories regulated by The National Firearms Act of 1934: machine guns, short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns, suppressors, destructive devices like bombs and grenades, concealable devices with the ability to discharge a shot through the energy of an explosive, and any firearm with a bore over half an inch that has not been determined to have a legitimate sporting use.
But some guns fall outside of this scope,[SOME GUNS??!!! Most do.] and many aren't registered, meaning surveys on gun ownership come to different conclusions. For a look at those results, check out this list."
It would not surprise me to learn that every suppressor registered in a state was counted as a firearm.

MSgt Cayle Harris - When I read "But SOME GUNS fall outside of this scope, [NFA registration requirements] and many aren't registered ..." (emphasis added), I wanted to pick up the author "by his stacking swivel" and send him back to Journalism School, or have him consider the number of guns he compiled in comparison to the 330,000,000 estimated guns privately owned in the USA.
