OPERATION PAUL BUNYAN was the most expensive tree cutting operation in history and was in partial retaliation for the death of two Americans who were trimming the same tree in the Joint Security Area, Panmunjom, Korea in 1976.

Read about this at the time. Always felt the US should have burned down the entire DMZ.

Great post. I had forgotten about this incident. Back in the late 1970's and early 1980's, Korea was a scary place with many things happening at the border that most Americans were unaware of.
