I umpired baseball many years and never had anything like this. Those kids sure won't forget he rules anymore.

Never liked that rule. It's very confusing and prone to mistakes like this. I've seen it happen far too many times (not in a situation like this), and after a third strike usually results in a crowd getting loud, it only adds to a player's confusion as the ump either does not call the out or say "no catch." I realize it's as old as baseball itself, and I've seen it both help and hurt the team I'm pulling for, but again, I just never liked the rule.

It’s an interesting rule that makes the game more interesting I believe. Usually your catcher is one the brightest kids on the team and that’s with good reason as most of the action revolves around home plate.
