Actually it was 'discovered' by a German scientist back in the 60s, but it wasn't fully understood back then. It was 'rediscovered' by the English scientists in the early 2000s.
Most people are aware of this element without being aware ... graphite can be termed as "multiple layers of graphene" ... you know .. pencil lead from our youth.
