Could you PLEASE stop using that photo when referencing Gitmo? The impression is that this is how detainees spent their entire day, every day at the finest military detention facility in the world. The photo is of a holding area prior to inprocessing. Detainees spent from about 5 - 40 minutes or so waiting their turn to take a shower, be examined, given new clothes, finger printed, etc. This is not a form of abuse or torture. Sensory deprivation articles worn only in transport from the airport to inprocessing and is designed to keep the detainees calm and less dangerous to themselves and others. Remember, 731 detainees have been RELEASED from Gitmo, and NONE executed, beheaded, blown up, hacked to death, dragged naked and lifeless through the streets, drowned or burned alive, all things our enemies have done to us, and/or our allies. There is no moral comparison between Gitmo and how our enemies treat their captives. Detainees enjoy FREE Qurans, prayer rugs/beads, directions to Mecca, halal and special holy holiday meals, sweets, white robes, beards, services of a US military Muslim chaplain, world class health, dental and vision care, recreation, library, DVD's, books, TV, and sports. ICRC physicians I worked with at Gitmo and then later in Iraq told me "No one does [detention operations] better than the US." No one. Gitmo is only "notoriuos" because the real story about it is hidden from view and photos like this are indiscriminately published without explanation. It's not perfect, but we follow Geneva and Law of War treatment of the detainees (unlawful combatants) even though they are not entitled to the privileges of these laws. Thank you.
