Eugene Bondurant Sledge (November 4, 1923 – March 3, 2001) was a United States Marine, university professor, and author. His 1981 memoir With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa chronicled his combat experiences during World War II and was subsequently used as source material for the Ken Burns PBS documentary The War (2007), as well as the HBO miniseries The Pacific (2010), in which he is portrayed by Joseph Mazzello.[1]

Maj Marty Hogan, do you know the greatest thing about Eugene Sledge? He was an Auburn Tiger! After returning from the war, he started college and in 1949 graduated from Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University)!

I read With the Old Breed shortly after it came out in 1981. It is a classic and I was pleased they used it as part of the HBO miniseries The Pacific. If you haven't seen that, it is more than worth the time.
